CASIN: The Comparative Analysis of Social Inequality

The Comparative Analysis of Social Inequality (CASIN) team is devoted to developing theory and methodology for studying social inequality and conducting empirical work. The research tasks focus on a comparative analysis of the social structure from both a temporary perspective (panel studies) and a territorial perspective (cross-national studies). Social inequalities are considered broadly, including economic, political, and cultural dimensions. These inequalities on the individual level are considered in the context of macro-characteristics of countries and their transformation through time.

The team cooperates with foreign institutions in different parts of the world. With our close partner, the Department of Sociology at Ohio State University, we maintain the Cross-National Studies: Interdisciplinary Research and Training program (CONSIRT, consirt.osu.edu). CASIN welcomes doctoral students from the Graduate School for Social Research (GSSR, gssr.edu.pl). It supports researchers with grants from various foundations and is open to collaboration with postdocs.

History of CASIN

The Comparative Analysis of Social Inequality (CASIN) team was established in 1992 to research individuals’ locations in the social structure and psychological functioning during radical systemic change. Kazimierz M. Słomczyński, Krystyna Janicka, Wojciech Zaborowski, and Bogdan W. Mach were the founders of this organizational unit.

In the first period, 1992-2012, CASIN was involved in several research projects funded by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the Committee for Scientific Research, the National Science Centre, The U.S. National Science Foundation, United States Information Agency (USIA), IREX, National Council of Learn Societies, Norwegian Council of Science, Mershon Center at the Ohio State University, and other organizations.
