Hyungsoo Woo

Hyungsoo Woo received his PhD from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and also trained at Sciences Po Paris and the London School of Economics (LSE). He held positions at Sciences Po Paris, the OECD, the ECPR Summer and Winter Methods Schools, and recently joined the POLPAN 1988–2023 project. Hyung’s research interests include political and social trust, inequality, democratic socialisation, and issues related to migration. Methodologically, he focuses on the analysis of panel and cross-national survey data, causal inference, and network analysis.

Dorota Woroniecka-Krzyżanowska

Dorota Woroniecka-Krzyzanowska is Assistant Professor at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Polish Academy of Sciences, and the Principal Investigator of the “Made in Iraq” project. She  is a social anthropologist and specializes in migration, urban studies and social change with geographical focus on the Middle East. Dorota holds degrees in Arabic studies (BA) and sociology (MA) from the University of Warsaw and a PhD in social sciences from the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Polish Academy of Sciences. She held visiting positions at the University of Oxford, Birzeit University and Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient. Her PhD thesis focused on the relation between identity and place in the context of protracted exile, based on ethnographic study of a Palestinian refugee camp. Dorota’s post-doctoral project explored knowledge relations in the field of architecture and urban planning between the Polish People’s Republic and Iraq through a case study of the Department of Architecture, University of Mosul.

Aleksandra Wojtaszek

Aleksandra Wojtaszek is a PhD student at the Graduate School for Social Research, Institute of Philosophy and Sociology,  Polish Academy of Sciences. Her doctoral research focuses on the urban situation and resilience of urban actors in Baghdad during and after the period of international sanctions, with a particular emphasis on how the city’s social and spatial structures evolved amidst changing conditions. Before joining the doctoral school, Aleksandra worked in the NGO sector, implementing humanitarian and development projects in Poland and the Middle East, including Jordan, Lebanon, and Iraq. Among these, she worked on the EU-funded MASAR project that emphasized municipal strategic planning, the enhancement of public services, and local economic development in Ninawa and Dohuk governorates, Iraq. This work provided her with invaluable hands-on experience in addressing urban challenges in conflict-affected areas. She holds a Master of Science in Arabic Studies from the University of Warsaw and a Bachelor’s degree in Oriental Philology from the Jagiellonian University. Her MSc thesis explored the urbanization processes in Jordan’s largest refugee camp for Syrian refugees, shedding light on the intersections of displacement and urban situation of the camp.

Research interests: urban studies, spatial planning, and marginalized settlements in the Middle East.

Anna Radiukiewicz

Anna Radiukiewicz is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Political Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences, and a postdoctoral researcher in “The Construction of Post-Pandemic Society: Covid-19 Street Protest in Poland” project funded by the National Science Centre (NCN), Poland (2021/43/B/HS6/01155). She is a sociologist who specializes in civil society studies. Anna is a member of the “Culture & Society” editorial team. She is on the board of the Social Communication Research Section of the Polish Sociological Association.

Michał Nawrocki is a PhD candidate in Sociology at the University of Warsaw, and a Graduate Research Assistant in the project “The Construction of Post-Pandemic Society”, funded by the National Science Centre (NCN), Poland (2021/43/B/HS6/01155). Melis Laebens

Melis Laebens received her PhD in Political Science from Yale University in 2020. Before that, she obtained BA degrees in Economics and in Political Science and International Relations from Bogaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey. She was a Postdoctoral Prize Fellow in Politics at Nuffield College (University of Oxford) between 2020-2023. Since 2023, Melis is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the Central European University in Vienna (full time) and has a part-time position as Assistant Professor in IFiS PAN.

Her research centers on democratic backsliding, political parties and electoral behavior, and spans several regions. Much of her research focuses on the role of ruling parties in enabling or hampering executive aggrandizement, particularly in Turkey, Poland and Ecuador. She is also leading an NCN SONATA project – entitled “Electoral Dynamics During Democratic Backsliding: Parties, Voters and Changing Lines of Conflict” – which investigates how parties’ policy positions and voters’ preferences on salient issues are transformed over the course of regime contestation in Poland and Turkey. In addition, she has several ongoing projects investigating political attitudes and voting behavior in Turkey.

Kamil Gacek

Kamil Gacek is a PhD candidate in Economics and Finance who holds a Master’s in Applied Mathematics and dual Bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and Finance. His research centers on the application of input-output models to analyze the impacts of natural disasters, particularly droughts, on the Polish economy. As a research assistant in the POLPAN grant project, his responsibilities include, among others, reviewing consistency in variables and labels, updating documentation for POLPAN 2018–2023, and co-authoring articles. He has been awarded University Mini-Grants for Research Projects Conducted by PhD Students (2023/2024) and two scholarships for the best PhD students (2024/25). Kamil is also a member of the International Input-Output Association and the Polish Economic Society, and he serves on the discipline council for Economics and Finance at AGH University of Krakow.

Research interests: environmental economics, mathematical modeling, and simulations, with a particular emphasis on analyzing the consequences of natural disasters — especially drought — on the Polish economy and developing data – driven strategies for effective drought risk management.
